Hanwha Ocean pitches four KSS-III Batch-II submarines with ten VLS tubes to Greece, offering 25 percent local work with Onex
Greek outlet Directus reported on October 19, 2026 that Hanwha Ocean has proposed four Jang Bogo-III Batch-II submarines, about 4,000 tons submerged and roughly 90 meters long with air-independent propulsion, lithium-ion batteries and ten vertical launch tubes for precision-guided and cruise missiles, for the Hellenic Navy program to replace its Type 209 boats. The offer, made through the exclusive teaming agreement signed with Onex Shipyards & Technologies in March 2026, includes technology transfer, at least 25 percent Greek industrial participation as the Navy technical guidelines require, and mid-life refit and upgrade support for the four existing Type 214 submarines at a local yard. Arming the boats with cruise missiles would require a separate acquisition and export approval. The competition is framed as three-way against the TKMS and Norway 212CD and a French Naval Group offer, with Saab and Hyundai Heavy Industries also having pitched designs earlier. Greece has not announced a shortlist, decision date or budget; next steps are a government shortlist and on-site inspections.
